Ipswich Central Audit Reveals Substantial Success
27-May-08
Over 150 levy payers packed the Ipswich Novotel to listen to the encouraging results of the first year independent audit. What Ipswich Central is doing in Ipswich was put into national context by Julie Grail from the British BIDS organization who stressed the need for good, clear communication. She also highlighted some other areas of England which are innovating their town centre, such as London Bridge, Holborn, Birmingham and Dorchester.
Just before the audit results were announced, a former Government planning adviser, Michael Bach talked about where Ipswich fits into the national scene and he spoke encouragingly about the future for Ipswich. He advised Ipswich to build on what is authentic and different in our town.
Chris Hollins from New Horizon said that there were many reasons to be pleased with the additional services provided. He commented: “We have examined Ipswich Central’s first year record and can reveal substantial success against most of the first year business plan targets. The company can now consolidate and move into the second year of delivery to provide more services that support Ipswich businesses.”
“A major recommendation for this year is that delivery should form the highest priority, with greater visibility, sustained quality and consistent communications all part of a successful formula.”
Ipswich Central is still the only Business Improvement District in the UK to have an independent audit. In the five main categories for Ipswich Central, “safe and secure” came out top with eighteen out of twenty and “out and about” was the least successful element with just eleven. “Clean and bright” and “target and tell” both were awarded fifteen and “look and feel” thirteen out of twenty.
Responding to the first independent audit, Paul Clement, executive director of Ipswich Central said there is still a long way to go and plenty of room for improvement. But, he said: “We are very encouraged by the inaugural audit, the details of which will be announced. Our first year has been action-packed and we have achieved a great deal in terms of additional improvements to our town centre. Year two is all about delivering maximum, highly visible advantages and making sure that everyone understands those benefits, through clever communications.”
